Thought Images

In some written documents, it is not uncommon to find that they can span several pages without any interruption.

If accompanied by visual elements, these are most often grouped in the center of the book, for reasons of economy and ease of layout. I believe it is very important that illustrations are juxtaposed with the text, that they are annotated, commented upon, and that together with the text, they form 'a whole'.

This commented and annotated graphic material, or if you prefer, these illustrated texts — whether diagrams, photos, drawings, sketches — are called 'thought images'.

These thought images fall into several categories, even if the boundaries are not exclusive: drawings expressing concepts, illustrations of ideas, process drawings, 'patterns', project research, comic strips, ideograms, personal reflection documents.

Other drawings, such as travel sketches, are obviously of a different nature...

Project Research

Project research consists of drawings, graphics, texts, and keywords that explore forms and constructive elements used in the development of a project.

Forms and Structures

Expression of Concepts

Concepts are key ideas, condensed through drawings or diagrams. Concept thought images allow for the communication of their meaning and structure.

Patterns

'Patterns': an English word used by Christopher Alexander to designate events associated with places, recognized as having accepted usage, and which can be combined in a design process.

Travel Sketches

Travel sketches are essentially travel journals, observation notes...

Process Drawings

Process drawings graphically express processes, sequences, and operating methods...

Ideograms

Ideograms are a highly condensed form of graphic expression, often postage-stamp-sized drawings, allowing for the rapid expression of concepts.

Illustrations of Ideas

Illustrations of ideas are more general explanations.

Comic Strips

Comic strips are essentially playful expressions that allow for the pleasant, or even ironic, communication of an idea, a process, a critique...
